South Block 3 Day Juice Cleanse & A Little Break

Hello strangers! A bunch of you have been asking me about the juice cleanse so I have to pop in and report on it. There will also be a full write up on ActiveLiveDC as well in the coming weeks. I just need to write it up and ship it off ; )

If you are looking for a super quick answer: yes it is possible to continue running and do a three day juice cleanse. You will not die and you will get through your runs just fine.

Now for the longer version – I started the juice cleanse on a Monday. I would give my three day pre-cleanse a solid B (maybe B-). It was Brennan’s birthday weekend and he had family and friends out celebrating and I drank a wee bit. I stuck to all fruits, vegetables, and some peanut butter for the three days, with an exception of some fries on Sunday around 5pm to soak up a little beer and make sure I didn’t feel like death in the morning.

So the first morning I woke up and did a bunch of running around and got to juice #1 around 10:30am. It was a green juice and was really good. I was happy to get the cleanse off on the right foot. Day one of the cleanse I drank my juices at 10:30am, 1:30pm, 3:30pm, 5:30pm, 7:30pm, and 9:30pm. I wasn’t hungry at all during the day, which surprised me quite a bit, I also drank a ton of water.juice4Tuesday it was back to work. I woke up at 5:00am and busted out a quick 5 mile run on the dreadmill. I did a 5 minute warm up walk, ran 5 miles (I think around 6.3), and then walked for another 5 minutes. I find walking before and after running really helps my knee and IT band. I also keep the treadmill at a 1.5% incline now.
juice6After the work out I showered, got ready for work, and hit the road. I opened up the first juice around 7:15am. I took my time drinking and finished it when I pulled into work at 7:45am. South Block gave me this awesome insulated bag and it was perfect for toting around a days worth of juice.
juice1I drank my second and second favorite juices around 9:30am. I am not sure how I didn’t snap a picture of this bottle considering how much I loved it. glowThe mint was out of this world. It made me realize how lazy I have been when it comes to making my own juices. I never add anything cool like mint or other awesome flavors like parsley, lemon, or heck even pineapple. WHY HAVE I NEVER JUICED A PINEAPPLE?? As soon as I move and can start using my juicer in the morning I have a feeling I’ll be plowing through pineapples. For day two I drank the juices at 7:15am, 9:30am, 11am, 1pm, 4pm, 6pm, and 8pm. I went right from work to a Pacers shift so I didn’t get home until 9:30pm. I was surprised how I still had some energy when I got home. I tucked myself in bed none the less : )

Day three was pretty uneventful. I did find two things a bit strange about the cleanse on this day. The first being I hadn’t eliminated since Monday morning (it is Wednesday at this point) and the second that my teeth were feeling a little “fury” if you will. You know how your teeth feel in the morning before you brush your teeth? That is how my mouth was feeling. I brushed my teeth probably 4 or 5x on Wednesday. When I got home from work I kicked back with juice #5 (this was in my top three as well) and caught up on some episodes of Beauty and The Beast. I <3 TheCW.juice3I was a little sad when I got around to finally drinking the last juice. This Caveman Mylk takes the shiny number one spot in my book for the cleanse. I looked forward to this one every single day. On the final day it was frozen (it was in the back of the fridge) and I was so sad. I snuggled with the bottle and kept shaking it until it finally allowed to me to drink it. I did a little research on how to juice cashews and dates. I am pretty excited to try it out.
juice2Thursday morning I woke up at 5am again to hit the treadmill. This run wasn’t great. I did a 5 min warm up, 5 miles @ 6.3 with 5 400 meter pick ups @ 7.5, and a 5 min cool down. This run was a bit faster than I have been doing since coming back from the IT issues. I was EXHAUSTED. Like stopped a few times to breath, thinking WTF, and then pushed through.juice7I had been craving some oatmeal all week so I made it with my muscle milk per usual. Let me just say GROSS. It tasted soooooo sweet. The cleanse really reset my sweet and salty levels. I ended up tossing the oatmeal and making it with water and adding a little bit of the muscle milk and then it was much better. I stuck to simple meals of fruit, veggies, and some eggs for the next 3 breakfast and lunches. I had dinner dates Thursday and Friday though with some friends who were out of town. So again I give myself a B (probably a B-) on the post cleanse. It is really hard to find 9 days with no plans!

Some other things I noticed while cleansing: My skin has been SUPER dry this winter and for the three days it felt a bit more moisturized, as in I didn’t feel like I needed to constantly lotion. Any cravings for food were nonexistent. I wanted something crunchy but when Thursday rolled around I just stuck to the basics. I am noticing that post cleanse I am snacking a lot less, only once a day if that. I also am putting a lot less salt on my food and not craving anything super sweet outside of fruit.

If you are an athlete and considering a cleanse I would definitely recommend three days. I think anything more than three would make high intensity training difficult. You need more than the 1200 calories this cleanse offered when you are burning 500 – 1000+ calories a day. If you live in the Arlington / DC area I HIGHLY recommend South Block Cafe. I enjoyed every single one of the juices I drank. The bottles are also reusable, I washed all mine and put them back in the box they came it. I plan on using them when I juice in the future at home. I also love that the ingredients are on the front so I can recreate some of the recipes at home. They have a few more flavors that are not included in their cleanse that I cannot wait to try out. Ordering is really simple online and then you just pick up your juice in store.

Finally I have a little bit of sad news. I will be stepping away from blogging for a month or two. I am still working on figuring out a balance of the new job, pacers, and the rest of my life. The next month or two will be a whirlwind and I don’t know how often I will be able to blog. I have my marathon, 2 weeks of visitors, a wedding in Detroit (!!!), a long weekend getaway, a really busy time at work, and moving on my plate in the next 6 weeks. I love you all and miss reading about your lives. I can’t wait to get my groove back and be able to read and write again. I am going to attempt to stay active on twitter and instagram so if you don’t follow me already you should do it NOW. I also always keep my DailyMile account current. The plan is to be back full time mid April, I plan on stopping by to reply to any comments and also let you guys know how the marathon goes on the 9th!

First off – IMMA MISS YOU! But I think taking some time from blogging is a refreshing and good thing. Especially with everything you have going on! I will be waiting patiently for your return, in the meantime I will send you snapchats ;)

I am so intrigued with a juice cleanse. Vancouver has juice shops coming out of the wazoo so I have plenty to choose from (not surprising.. van is a little cray in terms of “health”). I’m glad you had such a good experience but yeah, with running and being active I probably wouldn’t do it for any longer than that either! Maybe the fuzziness on your teeth has something to do with toxins and junk coming out of your system? Maybe? I have no idea but that’s just what came to mind – HA!

Anywho.. miss you already but enjoy everything! Lily’s wedding, your new job, finding balance AND good luck with your marathon! You are going to ROCK IT! xoxo

A blogging break does everyone some good! It’s fun to be on the computer but sometimes it becomes overwhelming to post and keep up with your ‘friends’. I think you are smart to focus on your work/life balance and race. Please keep us posted on how the marathon goes. I will be thinking about you! Enjoy your time away and don’t be a stranger!
