Marathon Training Week 4 & Running In The Arctic Tundra

Greetings from upstate NY! Getting right into it:week4Monday: Phase 1 Workout 3 (upper body) & 100 sit ups w/ variations
Tuesday: 3mi walking, Phase 1 Workout 4 (lower bod / back)
Wednesday: 6mi @ 9:38
Thursday: Phase 1 Workout 1 (upper body), 6.1mi @ 8:30
Friday: Phase 1 Workout 2 (lower body), lots of abs
Saturday: 5mi @ 8:40 (30° feels like 17°), 15 minute core crunch (NTC)
Sunday: 6mi @ 9:35 (17° feels like 9°)

This week was a bit of a treat. No long run! My Tuesday run got pushed to Wednesday because I had zero time, the 3 miles of walking was all commuting. Whenever I work at Pacers I get to sneak in 2 miles of walking and my round trip for my normal job is 1 mile also. So basically I only put it up because I felt bad about missing my run. Wednesday I ran at 5AM – it was a good run but I really don’t like running in the dark at all. Thursday was the best run ever but I’ll spare you the details because I already blasted it on DailyMile, Twitter, and FB, sigh. I pushed Fridays run to Saturday (are you sensing a trend?) and Sunday another easy run. I woke up on Saturday at 4:15AM and was on the road at 5AM heading north. By the time I arrived, hung out for the day, and ran I was exhausted, I forced myself to stay awake until 9PM but I was in bed at 8… All in all, great week, really FRICKEN cold runs Saturday and Sunday but still good (look at that snow!)snowI am at my parents for this entire week and I couldn’t be more excited. If you are new here my parents live on a lake and have the nicest kitchen in the world. It’s an A-OK place to rough it.

The one thing I am not SUPER jazzed about is the weather this week. Can you say brrrrrrr. I am pretty sure my parents think they are penguins because I end up in sweats and a hoodie / winter jacket 90% of the time while I am here. They think it is fine but I like to keep my apartment nice and toasty.

My parents don’t have a treadmill, which means all of my runs will be outdoors this week. My bag was filled with a few pairs of jeans and shirts but the majority of the space was reserved for cold weather running gear and sweats / hoodies to wear around the house. I ALWAYS over pack when I go home, I without fail end up in bulky sweats because I have turned into a wimp with cold weather. Jeans are just not as comfy to curl up on the couch with.I am thankful that they have lots of work out goodies in the basement so I will be able to keep up with my lifting plan. We started on a Thursday instead of Monday so my time home will over lap with the end of week 2 and the beginning of week 3. I can’t say enough good things about the plan I am so far. Running NEVER makes me sore so being sore all the time is sort of fun and new. It always shows me how I can still pump out a tough run and in the end it makes all the lactic acid in my muscles go away. I am learning that stretching is REALLY important and shouldn’t be an after thought.

When you are visiting your parents / friends for a long period of time what do you do about your work outs?
What temps will send your run inside?

THAT KITCHEN THOUGH. SWOON. Anyone who marathon trains in the winter in the Northeast is automatically my hero. I hate going out to walk to my car in the snow, much less running in it! ;)

I know I’ve said this before but I would KILL to live in your parent’s kitchen. Like it’s actually my dream. The cold weather running is rough but I always feel like such a badass after. I hope you love your vacation! I tend to stick to a normal training schedule for the most part when I’m at home, but some runs are replaced by walks with my mom or going to the gym for a zumba class.

Agreed, I feel like a total boss, a really cold boss but a boss none the less. I do love adding my mom to my work outs, we actually just finished up int he basement and I dragged her into a core and upper body work out when she was about to retreat back upstairs after her elliptical session!
