Why is is that vacations / long weekends come and go so quickly? You spend so much time planning activities and then the weekend comes and POOF! it’s over! Well Bren and I had an absolutely wonderful time this past weekend.I found The Country Bumpkins Bed and Breakfast through a search of pet friendly vacation rentals on TripAdvisor.com. Since Sasha joined our little twosome it has been tough to get away together so I thought this would be perfect. The B&B is located in Bedford Virginia – about 3 1/2 hours south west of DC. The town is situated in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the views everywhere are just incredible. We arrived on Friday around 8pm and to our surprise there was a fresh baked loaf of bread waiting for us.This poor loaf didn’t stand a chance. I am happy to report that we did make is last through the morning. Then we did a little exploring of the house. The majority of the art work and nick knacks had small price tags on them and there was a sign about the honesty policy. If you see anything you like add it to your total bill and it is yours. When you live in a big city these are the kinds of things that make you miss the slower pace of life. Could you imagine a hotel / B&B in a major city that went with the honesty policy?Everything was so adorable, we didn’t end up taking anything home with us but we enjoyed being surrounded by items that were clearly special to the person who made them.I fell in love with this wooden art work that was hanging in the bathroom. I sent pictures of it to my aunt to show my grandpa and am hopeful I will get it for Christmas! He is a master carpenter! Everything about the house was perfect! Jim and Susan (our hosts) really paid attention to every detail of the house. There was nothing that we needed that wasn’t already there. There is a really neat guest book on a small desk that gives you the opportunity to write about your stay and leave something for the hosts / other guests to read. One night when Bren and I were stuck in the house because of a storm we read through a bunch of the entries. It appears this B&B is always filled with guests! The only complaint I read was about the lack of WIFI from a year or two ago (Jim and Susan listened to what people were saying and there is now WIFI). In addition to the bread the house had some cereal and lots of juice for us also! We paid it forward and left a bunch of just opened food for the next folks (think chips / salsa).
Saturday morning Sasha, Brennan, and I headed out for a nice morning hike. We drove about 15 minutes to Sharp Top Trail and hiked 1.5 miles up in 45 minutes. The trail was rated difficult and it definitely was. There were a few times when we worried about Sasha being able to get down but she is a champion. I had more problems coming down the the mountain than she did. My hamstring and knee were shaking a lot and I wasn’t feeling incredibly stable on the way down. Slow and steady ready? My knee will heal… After the hike we played historian and went to visit Thomas Jefferson’s retreat at Poplar Forest.Brennan and I were both history majors at one point in our college careers so this was a ton of fun for us. It amazes me how people used to live and get around before modern day technology.
Sunday consisted of visiting a few wineries and just hanging out. Here are a few more pictures though to wrap up the weekend. All in all this was an absolutely fantastic weekend. If you are ever in the area I HIGHLY recommend booking a weekend to stay at this lovely house. While Bedford is pretty small and you will have to drive 10 minutes to get to the closest store, this house is perfectly situated in the country for a weekend to unplug. Cell service is iffy and the WIFI in the house got knocked out a few times because of evening storms. If you don’t like the person you are staying with you are in for some trouble : ) The cottage is a one bedroom but the couches fold out into beds giving enough space for four people to sleep. Perfect for a small family as well!!
